It is a mandatory 24-hour day of silence, reflection, and fasting for the Balinese Hindu New Year. The entire island shuts down—including the airport, shops, and roads—and everyone, including tourists, must stay indoors, keep lights off, and remain quiet.

Key Information for Nyepi 2026
- Date:Thursday, March 19, 2026 (6:00 AM) to Friday, March 20, 2026 (6:00 AM).
- Total Shutdown:No flights in or out of I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport, no traffic, and no public activity.
- Hotel Rules:Tourists must remain inside their hotel or villa premises.
- Noise/Light Restrictions:No bright lights, loud noises, or television/radio usage.
- Internet:Mobile data and, in some cases, hotel Wi-Fi may be suspended.
- Security:Local security (Pecalang) patrols the streets to enforce the rules.
What to Expect & Preparation
- Food:Hotels generally provide limited services, but it is recommended to stock up on snacks and water beforehand.
- Activities:The day is for relaxation, reading, and meditating, not for exploring.
- Pre-Nyepi Activity:The day before (March 18), vibrant Ogoh-Ogoh parades occur, and the day after (March 20) normal life resumes.
