Bali Volcano News : Highest alert level remains!

Although earthquake activity at the Gunung Agung continues to decline, the highest warning level remains. Yesterday there were 199 earthquakes recorded. Nevertheless, local vulcanologist say there are further alarms that the seismic activity inside the volcano does not subsist: an inflation of 6 cm has been measured since September. In the crater, further fumarolically active areas formed and water was ejected. This indicates a massive change in the hydrothermal system of the volcano. The magma in the magma chamber is very well insulated by the surrounding rock and remains in a state of eruption for a long time. In addition, many examples are known in which the volcanoes suddenly erupted after the subsidence of the seismic activity. For more than a month now, the highest warning level at the Gunung Agung has been established and the case illustrates how difficult volcanic eruptions can be predicted. Mostly, the vulcanologist only know that a volcano is ready for an outbreak but cannot tell if and when it will actually erupt.
